Approximately fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Police say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Officers then discovered many other marked vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report preliminary tests indicate the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; authorities are presently not informed of any harm in connection with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were working "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the public for information.
A senior representative commented the attack made him speechless and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, recalling the murder of nine people by a gunman targeting people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
