Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
